Both are of volcanic origin, both offer stunning scenery, villages waiting to be discovered, and the chance to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the city. But which one should you choose?

The answer naturally depends on the kind of experience you’re looking for. Lake Bolsena, with its larger size and the many towns overlooking its shores, is a wonderful choice for those who want to combine village-hopping with nature trails, sports and long-distance walks.

But if what you’re after is a destination that brings together lake, nature, villages, history, culture and food, Lake Bracciano has something extra. The area is compact enough to be enjoyed at a relaxed pace, yet at the same time it packs in a remarkable variety of things to see and do.

Lake Bracciano or Bolsena: the main differences

Let’s start with size. Lake Bolsena is the largest lake in Lazio, covering an area of around 114 km², while Lake Bracciano stretches across roughly 57 km².

It’s a difference you can feel during a holiday, too. Bolsena gives the impression of standing before a small sea, with wide-open views and several towns to explore along its shores. Its surrounding area includes numerous villages, among them Bolsena, Montefiascone, Marta and Capodimonte, as well as the islands of Bisentina and Martana.

Lake Bracciano, on the other hand, has a more contained footprint. Its shores are home to Bracciano, Anguillara Sabazia and Trevignano Romano, three villages each with their own character, offering different perspectives from which to discover the lake.

And it’s precisely this scale that gives Bracciano one of its greatest strengths: within a relatively compact area, a wide range of experiences come together, from visiting a Renaissance castle to strolling along the lakefront, from nature excursions to enjoying the pleasures of local cuisine.

One lake, many experiences: Bracciano’s strong suit

Lake Bracciano isn’t just a place to spend a few hours by the water. Here you can alternate moments of relaxation with outdoor activities, walks, cycling excursions and water sports, all without missing out on the area’s rich historical and cultural heritage and its villages.

Setting the scene is the Bracciano-Martignano Regional Nature Park, a protected area of extraordinary beauty boasting a great diversity of habitats, home to a wide range of animal and plant species. The area offers plenty of opportunities for anyone who loves walking and discovering nature at a slower pace.

Alongside nature sits an equally important historical and cultural side.

The village of Bracciano, with its medieval streets, is dominated by the Orsini-Odescalchi Castle, one of the most beautiful and majestic Renaissance residences in Europe. Stepping through its doors means embarking on a journey through more than five centuries of history, among rooms filled with period furnishings, ancient weapons, paintings, manuscripts, frescoes and precious decorations that have kept their original charm intact. A visit here adds a genuine cultural experience to any holiday.

Rounding out the cultural offering are also the Bracciano Civic Museum, which tells the story of the local community’s historical, artistic and social evolution, and the Italian Air Force Historical Museum in Vigna di Valle, one of Italy’s most important institutions dedicated to preserving and showcasing the country’s aviation heritage.

And then there are the lake’s other two villages. Anguillara Sabazia and Trevignano Romano each offer a different atmosphere, enriching the itinerary with walks, views, restaurants and moments of relaxation.

In other words, people don’t come to Bracciano just for the lake: the lake is simply the thread running through a much richer territory.

And what about Lake Bolsena?

Choosing Bracciano certainly doesn’t mean Bolsena isn’t worth a visit. On the contrary, the lake in the province of Viterbo is a destination of great charm. Its larger size makes it possible to build longer itineraries across the different villages overlooking its shores, while the surrounding landscape offers plenty of opportunities for those who enjoy cycling, hiking and water sports.

A distinctive feature is the Via Francigena, which crosses the area and makes Bolsena an important stop for those walking the pilgrim route to Rome. From a historical and cultural point of view, too, the village of Bolsena has a great deal to offer, with its medieval centre, the Monaldeschi della Cervara Fortress and the Basilica of Santa Cristina.

Lake Bracciano or Bolsena: which one to choose, then?

It’s precisely by comparing the two destinations that Bracciano’s main strength comes to light.

Lake Bolsena offers a larger territory, ideal for those who want to explore several villages, follow nature trails and walk the Via Francigena. Lake Bracciano, on the other hand, manages to bring together more elements within a smaller space: the lake, three villages, a castle of extraordinary historical value, museums, a nature park, outdoor activities and a food tradition deeply rooted in the local area.

It’s a destination that lets you build a different kind of holiday every time, at your own pace. You can choose to devote more time to culture, focus on walking, explore the lake’s shores, or simply slow down and soak up the atmosphere of the villages.

It’s this ability to bring together so many different experiences within a relatively small space, without losing the sense of calm that defines it, that sets Lake Bracciano apart.

Albergo della Posta is located in the heart of Bracciano, just steps from the Orsini-Odescalchi Castle and close to everything that makes the village special. Restaurants, shops, landmarks and the lake are all within easy walking distance, while the train station and parking are nearby too. A location that lets you experience Bracciano without ever needing a car.

Discover our rooms

When it comes to the lakes of Lazio, two names stand out above the rest: Lake Bracciano and Lake Bolsena.
