Overlooking one of Italy’s most enchanting lakes and dominated by one of the most beautiful and imposing Renaissance residences in Europe, Bracciano is the perfect destination for those who wish to escape the daily hustle and immerse themselves in a setting steeped in history, nature, and timeless atmosphere. During your stay, however, you may want to visit Rome, just a few dozen kilometres away. Whether you want to spend a day in the capital to see the Colosseum, stroll through Trastevere, or simply go shopping, getting from Bracciano to Rome is much easier than you might think.
In this article you will find all the available options for reaching Rome from Bracciano, including travel times, costs, and practical tips to help you plan your journey.
By car
The quickest — and most flexible — way to reach Rome from Bracciano is undoubtedly by car. The recommended route follows the Via Braccianese Claudia (SP493) towards Rome as far as Le Rughe/Formello, where you join the Via Cassia Veientana (SR2 Cassia Bis), which leads directly to the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA) and on into the city centre. The journey covers approximately 45–50 kilometres, depending on your destination, and takes between 50 and 80 minutes depending on traffic conditions.
Bear in mind that Rome’s traffic can be unpredictable, especially during the morning rush hour (7:30–9:30) and in the afternoon (17:00–19:30). If your goal is to visit the historic centre, keep in mind that finding parking in areas such as Trastevere, Prati, or the Colosseum can be both difficult and expensive. In this case, the ideal solution is to park on the outskirts near a metro station and continue by public transport.
By train
For those who prefer public transport, the train is a convenient and fast option. Bracciano’s railway station is located along the Rome–Capranica–Viterbo line and is served by the regional FL3 line. Trains run frequently, especially during peak hours, and the journey takes approximately 50–80 minutes depending on the number of intermediate stops. The main arrival stations are Valle Aurelia (which also has a stop on metro line A), Roma San Pietro, Roma Trastevere, and Roma Ostiense (from which metro line B is easily accessible). Tickets are affordable and can be purchased online on the Trenitalia website or at the station. Travelling by train is ideal for those who want to avoid traffic and enjoy the scenery along the way.

By bus
Another alternative is the bus, operated by the public transport company Cotral. The route connects Bracciano to various parts of Rome, including strategic points such as Saxa Rubra and Cornelia, from which you can continue by local public transport (bus or metro) to the city centre. Services run frequently and the journey takes around one hour, traffic permitting. The bus is a cost-effective option, particularly for those without a car who need a direct connection to the outskirts of Rome.
Several Cotral bus stops are located in Bracciano, including the one at Piazza Pasqualetti, just a few hundred metres from our hotel.
Practical tips
Whatever means of transport you choose, a few simple precautions will help you travel with greater peace of mind.
- If you go by car, avoid peak hours and remember that Rome’s historic centre is almost entirely a ZTL (restricted traffic zone): without a specific permit, private vehicles are prohibited from entering during daytime hours.
- If you take the train, check the timetables the evening before on Trenitalia or the app: the FL3 line is reliable, but like all regional lines it may be subject to changes on public holidays or during track maintenance.
- For the bus, it is recommended to use the official Cotral app to monitor departure times in real time.
