Lake Bracciano tour: complete itinerary

Lake Bracciano is one of the most beautiful natural treasures in Lazio: a volcanic lake with crystal-clear waters, surrounded by charming villages, forests, and gentle hills. Completing a full tour of the lake is an unforgettable experience, whether by bike, car, or motorbike, stop after stop. And there is no better starting point than Albergo della Posta, located in the heart of Bracciano’s historic center, just 400 meters from the lake shore.

Starting Point – Bracciano

Before setting off, it is worth taking a short walk through the picturesque streets of Bracciano’s historic center, where the silence is broken only by the sound of footsteps, and admiring the majestic Orsini-Odescalchi Castle, one of the best-preserved Renaissance residences in Europe.

From the castle, you can reach the Belvedere della Sentinella, one of the bastions of the ancient defensive walls, offering a spectacular view over the surrounding countryside and the lake.

First Stop – Vigna di Valle

Leaving Bracciano in a south-easterly direction, after just a few kilometres you reach Vigna di Valle, a green area directly overlooking the lake.

Here you will find the Historical Museum of the Italian Air Force (MUSAM), one of the most important aviation museums in the world. The exhibition does not only include aircraft and engines illustrating the evolution of Italian aviation, but also important collections of photographic equipment, radio systems, weapons, and onboard instruments. The seaplane base hosting the museum is the oldest in Italy, and it was here that the first Italian military airship took off in 1908.

Nearby, you will also find one of the most popular and well-known beaches on Lake Bracciano, with fine sand and shallow waters, ideal for families.

Second Stop – Anguillara Sabazia

Continuing along the south-eastern shore, you arrive in the medieval village of Anguillara Sabazia. The historic center, perched on a promontory extending into Lake Bracciano, is a maze of cobbled streets, stone houses, and quiet squares that tell centuries of history.

Among its main landmarks are the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, dating back to the 9th century and housing valuable frescoes and artworks; the 16th-century Palazzo Baronale Orsini, the historic seat of the town hall; the medieval Torrione, which hosts the Museum of Rural Life and Popular Culture “Augusto Montori”; and the Belvedere della Rocca.

The lakeside promenade, with cafés, bars, and a small pier, is perfect for a relaxing break before continuing your journey.

Third Stop – Trevignano Romano

Continuing along the perimeter of the lake, through scenic views and stretches immersed in nature, you reach the village of Trevignano Romano, where life flows peacefully and time seems to have stood still since the Middle Ages.

The town is dominated by the remains of the 13th-century Rocca, one of the most romantic ruined castles in Lazio. From its privileged position, you can enjoy a unique panoramic view over Lake Bracciano. Other notable sights include the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the Clock Tower, the Church of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, and the Civic Museum of Etruscan and Roman Culture.

The lakeside promenade, filled with cafés and traditional restaurants, is the perfect place to enjoy spectacular sunsets and moments of pure relaxation.

Return to Bracciano

The final stretch of the itinerary leads back to Bracciano along the western and south-western shore of the lake. This loop completes the tour, allowing you to experience the lake from all its perspectives, alternating between nature, culture, and relaxation.

Albergo della Posta is the perfect base to explore Lake Bracciano stress-free, giving you all the time you need to enjoy every stop along the way.
